It’s that time of year when students have just walked across a stage and received their diploma. Some will head on to more schooling but many will decide that they’ve just had enough, no more school. For those who have come to that point, and for many of us even years after that “I’m done with school” moment, the question that quickly moves to the forefront is this: What am I going to do with my life?

In Christian and non-Christian circles alike, the question of one’s calling is a popular one. A quick Google search for “Find my calling,” reveals 829,000,000 results. Perhaps one’s calling is to spend from now to eternity combing through those results! (BTW: If you spend one second on each link it will fill up 26 years of your life). Media outlets and organizations ranging from Fast Company to TED talks have articles on this very thing. Finding one’s calling is a hot topic.

Of course, the topic is approached with even more seriousness in the Christian world because the question is not just about whether you are doing what you love, the question is whether you are doing what God wants you to do. That adds a bit of pressure! Sometimes Christians feel so overwhelmed by this question that it moves them into a permanent state of paralysis…“If I do nothing, at least I won’t do the wrong thing,” right?!?

So, can we make some sense out of all this? Perhaps a good question is whether every Christian has a specific calling on their life, i.e. Does every Christian, from a missionary to a pet groomer, have a specific calling given them by God?

Answering this question will probably require more than one post so in what remains let’s just start with something we can say with certainty: God made each person alive unique and he intends to use each of us in all our uniqueness to show forth his goodness in the world. Where is this in Scripture? Well, it’s one of those ideas that comes more as a result of looking at Scripture as a whole but we could probably say with some confidence that we see this truth alluded in Paul’s wonderful statement, saying, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” Ephesians 2:10

Before we get to the question of specific calling, we’d do well to underline the fact that each of us has been created by God, in Christ, and that means we have a great destiny in God’s great universe.
